One-offs: handrail, cable rail, bollards, brackets, a rolling ladder
A stock part that nearly fits is still the wrong part. It gets cut short, shimmed level and the gap gets filled and ground until it almost disappears, and almost is the part that shows up in ten years when the shim works loose. That is the standard fix for a job that was never a catalogue job in the first place.
The shop's own way through it is simpler: measure what is actually there, draw it, cut and weld it on the bench, then bring it out finished and set it. Nothing gets fitted twice.
The gallery shows the real range that comes through the door: a curved cable rail following a limestone garden wall down a set of stairs, bright green powder-coated bollards and guard rail standing in front of a Lubbock retail store, and a black steel rolling ladder built onto a rail in a custom pantry. What we need from you before we can quote a one-off
A phone description of a shape is not enough to build from. "About so wide" and "kind of curved" leave too much to guess, and a guess on a bench is a return trip with a grinder.
One real dimension between two things that already exist is usually enough to start: post to post, floor to rail, wall to corner. Add a photo and a sense of what the piece has to carry or resist, a hand on a rail, weight on a shelf, and that is generally enough to say whether it is a straight bench job or something that needs measuring on site first.
Chapter 03
Repair and specialty work, not only new build
Throwing out a piece over one cracked weld, a bent rail or a worn bearing point is throwing out a piece that mostly still works. That is a repair, not a replacement, and treating it as a replacement costs the customer money for no reason.
Cracked brackets, broken hinges and worn bearing points get repaired at the shop, where the piece can be clamped down and welded properly instead of patched overhead in the wind that comes through most West Texas job sites.
