Chapter 01
Picket, panel and ornamental all fail differently
Thin wall picket bows between posts long before anyone expects it to, especially on a run with no cross bracing to fight the span. A solid panel catches wind the same way a solid gate leaf does, loading every post in the line instead of just the two carrying a gate. Ornamental ironwork usually fails at the welds nobody dressed, the decorative joints that look fine from the truck but read rough the moment someone stands at the fence line.
Wall thickness and post spacing get chosen for the run and the exposure it actually sits in, not off a single stock spec applied to every job. Welds get dressed on anything that will be seen from four feet away, because that is the distance a homeowner actually stands at when they are deciding whether the work looks right.
Skip that attention and the fence that looked fine at the walk-through starts showing itself within a year: a bowed picket here, a rough weld catching the eye there, a panel that hums audibly in a spring wind.

Post setting is the part nobody photographs
Posts set shallow in caliche, or set in a hole that funnels water straight to the base instead of away from it, are the reason a fence line that read straight on install day starts to wave a few years later. None of that shows up in a finished photo. It shows up in how the fence holds up.
Depth and diameter get sized to the fence height and the wind load it will actually carry, not to a number that is easy to dig. Concrete gets crowned at the top of the hole so water runs away from the post instead of pooling around it and working its way down through a South Plains freeze and thaw cycle every winter.
Get that step wrong and the cost is a fence line that reads straight in year one and waves in year four, long after the crew that set it has moved on to the next job.
Chapter 03
Matching the fence to the gate that will hang in it
A fence bought from one supplier and a gate ordered from another is how the picket rhythm breaks right at the opening, and the gate ends up reading as an afterthought bolted onto a fence line it was never actually drawn against.
The same shop draws both here, so the infill pattern, the picket spacing and the finish carry straight through the opening instead of stopping at it. The roller posts for a slide gate become part of the fence line itself rather than something bolted on beside it after the fact.
That matters most on a property with real frontage, where the fence and the gate get read as one line from the road, not as two separate purchases that happen to sit next to each other.

What we need before we can quote a fence line
- The run length and the terrain it follows, including any slope or grade change.
- A photo of what is already there: an existing fence line, a bare property line, or a gate we already built that the new fence needs to match.
- Picket, panel or ornamental, and how much privacy you want set against how much wind you want passing through.
- Whether a gate needs to hang in the line now, or is coming later.
